Renowned for its versatility and distinct reddish-pink hue, Red Grandis has emerged as a frontrunner in the pursuit of a timber that is both high quality and sustainable.

At a time when the focus on sustainability is more than heightened, Red Grandis is redefining the way we approach the construction of windows and doors. Our guide to Red Grandis delves into the many aspects of the timber, highlighting its ecological benefits and the rapidly growing significance in the world of construction.

What is Red Grandis?

Red Grandis is a premium-grade hardwood known for its striking reddish-pink hue, originating from the eucalyptus family. Grown primarily in well-maintained and monitored forests in South America, Red Grandis offers exceptional durability, stability and renewability, making it an ideal alternative to traditional timber options. Compared to slower-growing hardwoods, the environmental impact of Red Grandis is significantly lower, positioning it as a leading choice for a number of applications.

How is Red Grandis sourced?

Thanks to its rapid growth and responsible harvesting practices, Red Grandis minimises deforestation concerns, making it a premier choice for environmentally conscious projects.

A fast growing timber, it is harvested when it reaches a diameter of approximately 60cm which typically occurs after 20 years of growth. The carefully managed growth process involves considered spacing, pruning and expert oversight by foresters to ensure the highest quality of tree. This allows for a safer extraction that avoids disturbing neighbouring trees in the local ecosystem.

After extraction, the timber is then transformed into pre-planed lengths with the natural hue providing an excellent canvas for both paints and staining.

Compared to slower-growing timber options, its renewability and minimal environmental impact solidify its position as a sustainable material, contributing positively to the construction industry’s sustainable practices.

The Red Grandis used by Box Sash is sourced by two companies based in Uruguay: Urufor and Cofusa. Uruguay has one of the highest rankings of environmental sustainability and places a tremendous respect on the environment and contributions to the local community and these beliefs are reflected in the work done by both Urufor and Cofusa.

Cofusa and Urufor

Cofusa has actively been involved in forest management and maintenance since 1989. The cultivation of Eucalyptus Grandis takes place under environmentally sustainable practices on deep, sandy soils located in northern Uruguay.

Urufor’s sawmill has been operating since 1992, processing the logs sourced from Cofusa’s forests to yield a wood of exceptional quality. In giving back to the people of Uruguay, the two companies have created employment opportunities for over 600 individuals.

Red Grandis in Doors and Windows

Due to both the environmental and aesthetic appeal of Red Grandis, its use in the construction of doors and windows has grown significantly. Outside of the environmental benefits sourcing a sustainable wood poses, its functionality is as good if not better than other materials. Its ability to withstand the effects of moisture prevents warping and rotting, ensuring that doors and windows maintain their structural integrity and aesthetic appeal even in humid or damp environments.

In the context of energy efficiency and sustainability, Red Grandis offers excellent insulation and heat retention, reducing the need for excessive heating or cooling in the home. This not only contributes to a more comfortable indoors but also aids in reducing energy consumption, lowering your carbon footprint and utility costs, giving you a more sustainable living environment that aligns with contemporary eco-friendly practices.

The resilience of Red Grandis allows doors and windows to endure various weather conditions, including exposure to sunlight, rain and wind. Its inherent strength ensures that windows and doors made from the material maintain their functionality and structural integrity over extended periods, reducing the need for frequent replacements or repairs. This longevity contributes not only to saving on costs but also promotes more sustainable construction practices by minimising waste and resource consumption. Despite its heat resistance, Red Grandis is still capable of effectively insulating rooms, reducing energy consumption and promoting eco-friendly living.
